Restoration project on the Afon Teifi completed following removal of abandoned vessels

14 October 2026

37 derelict vessels, various dinghies and a canoe were among abandoned items removed from the river system following the successful completion of a major environmental restoration project on the Afon Teifi estuary in Cardigan.

The project was delivered by Cooke & Arkwright, managing agents for The Crown Estate in Wales, and supported by Ceredigion County Council and Growing Mid Wales.

The Afon Teifi is one of Wales' most iconic waterways, supporting a rich variety of marine life and habitats. Over time, however, abandoned vessels had accumulated throughout the estuary, posing environmental risks through the release of pollutants including microplastics, glass-reinforced plastic, fuel residues and other harmful substances. These deteriorating vessels also created navigational and visual impacts on the estuary.

In response, The Crown Estate committed £80,000 to a restoration programme developed with Cooke & Arkwright to identify, remove and responsibly dispose of the vessels and other items, helping to protect the long-term health of the river and its surrounding environment.

As part of the scheme, a vessel identification survey was undertaken by Afon Teifi Fairways Ltd to establish ownership details wherever possible.

Following a formal notice period, specialist contractor Bluepoint Marine carried out the removal operations, successfully extracting 37 vessels and other discarded items from the estuary and ensuring their responsible disposal.

The completed works support the enhanced environmental quality of the estuary, removing potential sources of contamination and contributing to a cleaner, safer and more sustainable river system. The project forms part of The Crown Estate's commitment to supporting nature recovery and responsible management of coastline across Wales.
