New 103 bed hotel for Newport

31/05/07

Pedersen Hotels has acquired a three-quarter acre site in Newport from Euro Commercials (South Wales) Limited, where it is to build a 103 bed ETAP budget hotel. Demolition of the original 8,500 sq ft building in Malpas Road, which was disposed of in a deal negotiated by Cooke & Arkwright, has already been completed and the site is being cleared for the construction of the hotel along with 107 car parking spaces.

ETAP is part of the Accor Group which also runs the Novotel, Mercuri and IBIS Brands. Pedersen has negotiated a contract with Accor which will manage the hotel on behalf of Pedersen when it opens in February 2008. Robert Hodge, Director of Pedersen Hotels, said, “There is a shortage of good value hotel facilities in the Newport area and along this part of the M4 corridor,” he said. “This is an ideal location, close to the Brynglas Tunnels and with fast access to Newport city centre and Cwmbran.”

Pedersen also owns the Novotel, formerly the Hanover hotel, and the ETAP, both on Tyndall Street in Cardiff, and recently acquired the Ramada Encore in Fabian Way, Swansea, which is being managed by Accor under the IBIS brand.

The sale of the Malpas Road site is part of a major new expansion programme by Mercedes Benz truck and van dealers Euro Commercials. Roger Thomas of Cooke & Arkwright, said, “The Malpas site had served the company very well and allowed them to establish a foothold in Newport. We have recently acquired new premises for them on Corporation Road close to the southern distributor road. This move follows swiftly after the company’s expansion in Cardiff where they have created a new specialist van and light commercial sales centre on Penarth Road.”

Euro Commercials plans to extend the site in Newport. Managing director, Chris Anthony said, “We had outgrown the depot in Malpas Road which we bought off BT ten years ago. Our move to our new site on Corporation Road gives us the opportunity to expand the range of services we provide to customers in the area and compliments our other main outlets in Cardiff, Bridgend and Swansea.”
