Greggs’ city stadium podcast

21/05/09

Leading bakery Greggs has opened a 1200 sq ft store directly opposite the entrance to the new 30,000 seater stadium for Cardiff City FC and Cardiff Blues in Capital Shopping Park, Leckwith.  The new outlet is in a stand alone ‘pod’ fronting the car park between the stadium and the 480,000 sq ft retail park.  Greggs has employed 15 new staff at the store and plans to match opening hours to late night games and fixtures when the stadium opens in time for the next season.

“This is a superb store and we are delighted to have secured the premises,” said Retail Operations Manager Russell Gower.  “It is an ideal location as it is so close to the new stadium, as well as the retail park, so the shop will attract a diverse range of customers.  We intend to be flexible with our hours to suit the needs of football and rugby fans as well as shoppers.”

Alex Kalebic of Cooke & Arkwright, who acquired the premises for Greggs said that it was something of a pioneering store for the business.  “Greggs has branched out from the high street into business and industrial parks recently, but this is their first venture on a purpose built retail park – let alone one with a first class stadium to-boot,” he said.  “It’s a nice touch that they’ve installed a large flat screen TV with Sky Sports in the shop, which should go down well with hungry sports fans.”

Capital Shopping Park is a £170m development owned by PMG, which recently acquired a 100% stake in the project.  It incorporates the football stadium, an athletics stadium, an indoor training facility, as well as 480,000 sq ft of retail development and roads and infrastructure improvement.  Greggs joins other retailers at the site including Asda, Next, SCS, M&S, Smyths Toys, Mammas and Pappas, Hobbycraft, JJB Retail, JJB Leisure and Costco.
