Greggs take first bite at Celtic Springs retail quarter

A retail ‘quarter’ is taking shape at Newport’s £100m Celtic Springs Business Park.  A parade of shops close to the existing Dragon Fly pub and restaurant and Express at Holiday Inn, to the east of the park, will add to the facilities already present at the 45- acre business park adjacent to the A48 and near junction 28 of the M4.  One of the three planned shops has already been snapped up by Greggs, who are eager to open for business on the park by the end of the year. The new store will lead to the creation of 12 new jobs.

Robert Knight Award for Lifetime Achievement

A Welsh chartered surveyor has been given an inaugural lifetime achievement after 30 years of dedication to the industry.  The first annual Robert Knight Award was presented to Jeremy Rawlins, 53, of Cowbridge, who is held in high esteem in the property industry by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Wales.

Thundering ahead

Thunder Road, Wales’ leading motorcycle dealer has doubled its size and opened a new 12,500 sq ft showroom and workshop in Cwmbran, acquired by Cooke & Arkwright.  Around 200 motorbikes from scooters to super bikes, including the full Honda range are on display, as well as a wide range of riders’ kit and accessories.  Teamed with its long established showroom in Bridgend, Thunder Road is now the largest motorbike dealership in South Wales and employs 60 staff between the two locations.

New public research centre for Cardiff University

In a property deal brokered by Cooke & Arkwright, Cardiff University has leased 11,200 sq ft at Museum Place, Cardiff, from Norton Evans Ltd.  This follows closely on an earlier deal in which it acquired 14,500 sq ft at Deri House in Park Grove, representing two of the largest office deals in Cardiff this year.

Shining a light on a day in the life

When John Day leaves his house for work in the morning, he never knows what challenges the day will bring. John’s job is a little bit more unusual than most and sometimes involves hanging 130 feet up in the air, braving the sea and battling the prospect of ghosts.

John, a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Wales, is one of the nation’s few surveyors of lighthouses which provide navigation to ships and seafarers.

The “credit crunch” and its ongoing effects have all been well documented.  Nowhere has the destructive nature of reduced credit in our debt dependent nation been more evident than in the high streets across the country.  But empty shops left by the recession and increasingly attractive terms offered by landlords, provide opportunities for entrepreneurs to create new businesses with a prime high street presence.

Wally’s double deli delight

Cardiff’s best loved deli, Wally’s Delicatessen has bucked the downward trend on the high street and doubled the size of its long established outlet in Royal Arcade, Cardiff.  The popular 60 year old store acquired the lease on adjoining premises of 2,170 sq ft, through agents Cooke & Arkwright in March and immediately began full refurbishment work alongside the existing deli.  The fully extended store will open on Monday, 8th June 2009.

Greggs’ city stadium podcast

Leading bakery Greggs has opened a 1200 sq ft store directly opposite the entrance to the new 30,000 seater stadium for Cardiff City FC and Cardiff Blues in Capital Shopping Park, Leckwith.  The new outlet is in a stand alone ‘pod’ fronting the car park between the stadium and the 480,000 sq ft retail park.  Greggs has employed 15 new staff at the store and plans to match opening hours to late night games and fixtures when the stadium opens in time for the next season.
